British Columbia School Completion Certificate Policy
Phil & Jennie Gaglardi Academy
Rational
- Gaglardi Academy values all students and recognizes the importance of identifying and awarding the achievements and successes of all students.
- Therefore Gaglardi Academy will award School Completion Certificates (SCC). School Completion Certificates are intended to recognize the accomplishments of students, including special needs students, who have succeeded in meeting the goals of their educational program other than the B.C. Ministry Graduation (Dogwood) Program.
- Gaglardi Academy School Board is committed to ensuring that processes are established for all students including students with special needs which:
- Accurately identify students who require modifications to their program.
- Apply appropriate structures and programs to meet the educational needs of every student.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding the educational program and progress of every student
Requirements for Granting a School Completion Certificate
Gaglardi Academy will submit names of students to be awarded a School Completion Certificate to the BC Ministry of Education. Such students will have an IEP in place and will be enrolled in an educational program that is not designed to meet the requirements for the granting of a Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Certificate).
To be eligible for a School Completion Certificate, a student must meet the following criteria:
- Completion of goals of an IEP
- Completion of Graduation Transition Plan
- Completion of Work Experience/Community Service Requirements
- Completion of Physical Activity Requirements
Evaluation and Assessment
The learning outcomes for a student’s educational program will be contained in the student’s IEP. Gaglardi Academy will issue marks in a manner consistent with the provincial letter grade standards. Gaglardi Academy will maintain the appropriate records in the student information system, including entering the marks in TRAX in order to allow the BC Ministry of Education to prepare a School Completion Certificate and a School Transcript. The transcript will then reflect the BC Ministry authorized courses and/or locally developed courses.
Administrative Procedures
Gaglardi Academy must ensure:
- That any student who is deemed to be on a program other than one that leads to a graduation certificate must have an IEP. The IEP must clearly state that the educational program will NOT lead to a Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Certificate).
- The appropriate supports are in place to meet the educational program outcomes developed for the IEP.
- The parents/guardians are included in the development and assessment of the IEP and are FULLY aware that their child's IEP program WILL NOT lead to a Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Certificate).
- Student progress will be reported regularly through the IEP process.
- The reporting processes are in place to enable the BC Ministry of Education to issue a School Completion Certificate and a Student Transcript to students who are not in the regular graduation program.
